Unlocking your leadership potential: How NYLD empowers newcomer youths to lead with confidence

Leadership isn’t just about guiding others; it begins with discovering the leader within yourself. For newcomer youths, arriving in a new country comes with challenges, including adapting to a new culture, learning a different language, and building confidence.
Yet, these challenges can open the door to powerful opportunities for growth. That’s where the YMCA Newcomer Youth Leadership Development (NYLD) program comes in.
The journey of newcomer youths

Adjusting to life in a new country isn’t easy. Many young newcomers struggle to find their voice in unfamiliar environments. Leadership development can play a transformative role in helping them develop resilience, a sense of belonging, and confidence.
NYLD provides a safe, supportive space where youth can grow personally while connecting with peers who share similar experiences.
What is NYLD?
NYLD is designed to help newcomer youth aged 13–30 have a positive settlement experience and become engaged members of the community. It offers a kind, encouraging, and fun environment where you can meet new people, develop new skills, and get involved in your new community.
The program offers:
- Leadership training
- Social, creative, and recreational activities
- Visits to popular city attractions
- Volunteer opportunities at the YMCA and in the community
- Workshops on a variety of topics from staff and guest speakers
- Celebrations for special occasions, holidays, and festivals
- Youth-led special events

“One moment that stood out to me was during one of our workshops, where I pushed myself to speak up. I’ve become more confident in sharing my ideas and contributing to group discussions.” — Piranakshy, a NYLD participant
Building leadership and career skills

NYLD isn’t only about leadership — it also offers pathways to professional development through the Newcomer Youth Internship (NYI) program.
NYI is a branch of the NYLD program that aims to empower youth to develop leadership, teamwork, and job readiness skills.
Through the Newcomer Youth Internship Program, young people create real impact by leading community projects, growing through professional workshops, and collaborating with peers — all while earning competitive pay.

“I’ve grown in so many ways — mentally, psychologically, and professionally. Through the Newcomer Youth Internship, I built valuable skills and had the opportunity to work alongside NYLD advisors and the YMCA marketing and communications team. That experience gave me the confidence to step out of my comfort zone and build meaningful skills.” — Teslim Abass, a NYI intern
Leadership beyond the program
Joining NYLD means becoming part of a community that values growth, resilience, and diversity. The program goes beyond building leadership and friendship; it creates a space where newcomer youth feel supported, included, and celebrated for who they are.

As NYLD continues to grow, so does its impact. By nurturing confidence and embracing diverse perspectives, the program is shaping the leaders of tomorrow. With this support, newcomer youths are stepping into their futures with courage and optimism — ready to make a meaningful difference in their communities and beyond.
When newcomer youth unlock their leadership potential, they don’t just transform their own lives; they strengthen the entire community. NYLD actively demonstrates the YMCA of Greater Toronto’s mission to build inclusive, connected, and vibrant communities, as well as its vision of empowering people to reach their full potential.
