Celebrating growth: YMCA Black Achievers Mentorship Program Graduation 2025

10 July 2025 - by YMCA of Greater Toronto

On Friday, July 4, 2025, the YMCA Black Achievers Mentorship Program hosted its annual graduation celebration at CIBC Square, graciously sponsored by CIBC Foundation. Co-emcees and mentees Solomon Adetoro and Tunmise Awodumila opened the evening with heartfelt gratitude and excitement. Solomon, a Grade 11 student at Castlebrooke Secondary School and aspiring neurosurgeon, highlighted the program’s expansion to three sites. “There are three times as many graduates to honour; therefore, let’s celebrate three times as much,” he said.

Tunmise, a Grade 11 student at Sir Wilfrid Laurier Collegiate Institute and a future major in finance and economics, shared how the graduating cohort impacted him.

“Being surrounded by inspiring leaders and peers in this program has made me feel seen and empowered in ways I didn’t expect. Today is more than just a celebration — it’s a reminder of what’s possible.” —Tunmise Awodumila, Grade 11 student and co-emcee

The event began with a Land Acknowledgment by Jaelyn James, followed by stirring renditions of the Canadian and Black national anthems by program alum Saraphina Knights, a Centennial College graduate and rising star in Toronto’s music scene.

Shermanda highlighted the role and importance of mentors.

“Mentorship is about showing up, again and again, to remind young people that they are seen, supported, and capable of greatness.” —Shermanda Bernard, Senior Mortgage Renewal Team Leader at CIBC and three-year mentor in the Black Achievers program.

Akosua Matthews, Chair of the YMCA of Greater Toronto Board of Directors, congratulated graduates and encouraged them to “seek out the people and places that see your full self.” She emphasized the importance of authenticity and community, echoing sentiments shared in graduate testimonials.

Moving tributes

Ayobami Popoola, a father of graduates Enoch (Class of 2025) and Daniel (Class of 2024), shared a heartfelt speech that moved the audience.

“I’ve seen this transformation firsthand in my own sons. When they entered this program, they came in with curiosity and potential. Today, they stand taller — not just physically, but emotionally and mentally. This program has poured courage into their hearts, sharpened their sense of identity, and elevated their self-esteem in ways that no words can fully capture. It has helped them see themselves not as statistics, but as leaders. Not as voices in the background, but as voices that must be heard. That transformation — from questioning to confident, from hesitant to hopeful — is what I celebrate today.” —Ayobami Popoola, parent of two Black Achiever graduates.

Enoch Popoola speaks to guests as the winner of the Outstanding Black Achievers Award.

Moving words continued as co-emcees Solomon and Tunmise expressed gratitude to mentors and staff. “You are helping us become who we are meant to be,” Solomon said. Tunmise added, “Graduates, your dedication, leadership, and achievements motivate me to stay focused.”

Program staff celebrated the unique spirit of each site’s graduates. Samantha Adebiyi praised Scarborough’s “resilient, creative, and unapologetically bold” youth; Huda Muddei highlighted Etobicoke’s “unique, bold, and beautiful” contributions; and Chris Telford commended Brampton’s “drive, talent, and promise.”

YMCA Black Achievers Awards

Each year, Grade 12 youth in the Black Achievers program are invited to apply for these awards, funded entirely by our scholarship drive donors. The application process is open to program youth who are graduating from high school and going to post-secondary programs. The application considers a young person’s leadership activities, community volunteerism, and academic development and achievement.

Trailblazer Award winner: Jahkai Brown

This award recognizes a young person who has boldly forged their own path, using creativity, courage, and commitment to inspire others and open new doors for their community. Jahkai was selected for the Trailblazer Award because of the remarkable way he has transformed challenges into purpose.

A published author, passionate artist, and youth mentor, Jahkai turned his experiences, including overcoming the stigma of a learning disability, into a powerful message of perseverance. Through his book, created during his time with the Black Achievers program, he shared his own story and helped others find their voices. Whether directing plays, leading school clubs, or mentoring peers, Jahkai is a trailblazer — someone who clears a path for others by walking bravely in their own truth.

Community Champion Award winner: Omosede Queency Osagiede

This award honours a young person who has gone above and beyond in service to others, demonstrating compassion, leadership, and a commitment to uplifting their community. Omosede was selected for her powerful contributions to both her school and the Black Achievers program.

After arriving in Canada last year, Omosede found her voice and used it to lead. Whether launching a clothing drive, organizing civic engagement initiatives, mentoring through braiding workshops, or facilitating emotional well-being sessions, Omosede has consistently shown that community care is at the heart of who she is. Her dream of becoming a nurse is grounded in service, equity, and representation, and this award celebrates the inspiring impact she has already made.

Journey to Greatness Award winner: Jayden Roberts

This award celebrates a young person who has demonstrated perseverance, growth, and an unwavering commitment to personal development. Since joining the Black Achievers program, Jayden has seized every opportunity to grow, consistently showing up with energy, thoughtfulness, and leadership.

He’s made tremendous progress on his journey, from engaging in debate and advocacy to leading civic engagement initiatives and representing the program at high-profile events. Jayden's decision to take time to strengthen his academic foundation highlights his commitment to long-term success. His story is one of continuous evolution, and this award recognizes the path he has walked and the greatness still to come.

Academic Excellence Award winner: Onyinyechukwu Zimra Obimdike.

This award honours a young person who has demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, intellectual curiosity, and a commitment to personal and community growth. Zimra received this award not only because of her strong academic record, but also for winning the YMCA Black Achievers Public Speaking Competition and serving as a dedicated member of the program’s leadership team.

Since arriving in Canada just before Grade 11, she has embraced new challenges with grace, grit, and determination. Her pursuit of excellence is matched by a passion for justice, a gift for communication, and a desire to use her voice to create space for others. Zimra is a powerful example of how academic excellence, leadership, and advocacy can go hand in hand.

Bridge Builder Award winner: Orisetimeyin Bawo-Oteri

This award recognizes a young person who brings people together, fosters inclusion, and creates space for others to thrive. Orisetimeyin was selected for her unwavering commitment to building supportive communities within the Black Achievers program and beyond.

Whether advocating or organizing community initiatives, Orisetimeyin has consistently used her voice to uplift others and bridge gaps across differences. Her passion for connection, empathy, and equity perfectly aligns with the heart of this award.

Outstanding Black Achiever Award

Titobi Oriola, the co-winner of last year’s Outstanding Black Achiever Award, was at the event to announce this year's winner. This award recognizes a young person who has demonstrated exceptional leadership, academic achievement, and impact within the Black Achievers program and beyond. They embody the values of excellence, purpose, and community, and are seen as a leader among their peers, someone whose actions inspire, uplift, and set a powerful example for others.

Outstanding Black Achiever Award winner: Enoch Popoola

Enoch’s speech, reflecting on his transformation through the program, was a highlight of the night.

“When I first joined the Black Achievers program, I didn’t fully understand what it was about. I showed up, but I wasn’t committed. Then one day, Ms. Samantha sat me down and asked, ‘Do you really want to be here?’ That moment changed everything. I chose to stay. I chose to commit. And from that point on, I started to become. I found my voice, my confidence, and a sense of purpose I didn’t know I was missing. This program didn’t just prepare me for graduation — it prepared me for life. And tonight, standing here, I know that this is just the beginning of something much bigger.” —Enoch Popoola, 2025 Outstanding Black Achiever Award recipient.
