YMCA love stories: Building connections beyond the gym
Valentine’s Day is about celebrating all types of love. That’s what we’re doing at the YMCA of Greater Toronto! We create spaces where connections flourish, lives intertwine, and love between partners, friends, and families grow.
The following stories from Denzel and Julia, and Justin and Renee remind us of the power of shared values, of a third space beyond home and work where people come together to support one another, grow, and build something meaningful.
Denzel & Julia: Love in uncertain times
During the pandemic, the Y was a source of stability and connection for Denzel and Julia, both YMCA Child Care employees. They provided comfort and care to children and families when it was needed most, and their professional relationship grew into a deep personal bond. They’ve been inseparable ever since.
Denzel and Julia built a beautiful life together and are the proud parents of two boys who are growing up in the YMCA community. What began as a workplace connection became the foundation of their family, highlighting that the Y is not just a place to work or play but also a place to find lifelong love and support.
Justin & Renee: From a YMCA friendship to a lifetime together
From the moment he met Renee at the YMCA in 2011, Justin knew she was someone special. During a basketball game at the Y, he told a friend he would marry her one day.
Five years later, in 2016, they began dating. Since then, they’ve celebrated many big milestones together — engagement, marriage, and having children — while being part of the YMCA community. They also made lasting, meaningful friendships at the Y.
Now, as parents of two children, Justin and Renee continue to cherish the Y's role in their lives.
A place for life’s biggest moments
At the YMCA of Greater Toronto, we take pride in being more than a gym. We offer many services to the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) community and serve as a third space — a home away from home where people connect, find belonging, and sometimes even find love. The Y is a place where all types of relationships grow and thrive.
This Valentine’s Day, we celebrate the love stories that started within our walls. To everyone who has found connection, friendship, and love at the Y — thank you for being part of our community.
Whether you’re here for a workout, children’s programs, employment services, or to be among others who care, know that the YMCA is a place where love, in all its beautiful forms, finds a way to shine brightly.
Happy Valentine’s Day from all of us at the YMCA of Greater Toronto!
