Need some fitness inspiration? We recently caught up with busy Y member and mother of 2 Karen Price, to hear how she and her family stay active at the Y.
Hi Karen, thanks for taking the time to chat! What YMCA location do you usually go to, and how often?
My family and I go to the Brampton Y, and we're there at least once every day, and sometimes multiple times a day.
That's awesome to hear! What does your daily fitness routine include?
Every day is different - during the summer I participated in the kettlebell class with Ashley Cyr, which was amazing! I also take YMCA Barre class with Ivan.
We really do have great trainers at the Y!
For sure - they have helped me create new routines when I needed to shake things up. I have actually managed to maintain a 30-lb weight loss!
Well done! What do your kids do at the Y?
My sons both take swimming lessons and I do the parent and tot swim with my youngest son. On Monday evenings and Saturday afternoons my oldest son, Dexter, takes hip hop dance lessons with Gautam. He loves it! Dexter is autistic, and though he's high functioning, he sometimes has problems paying attention. Gautam is such an amazing teacher - we've found that hip hop has really helped Dexter get active and practice his listening and attention skills. The social skills he's learned at hip hop have definitely helped him interact with his classmates at school.
Wow, you really are a busy Y family!
Definitely! We often just come to let the boys play in the playstructure or discovery centre if they have energy to burn and it's raining outside, and my youngest son really enjoys playing with other kids in the child-minding area. My husband works out and runs every day as well. Plus, we have our family day on Sundays - my husband and I work out in the mornings while our boys are in pre-school programs, then we all swim together.
We really appreciate you sharing your family's Y story with us, Karen - thanks!
No problem! My family and I love the YMCA and plan to be involved in our Y community for years to come!
