Volunteering for Summer Camps a Valuable Experience

13 April 2016 - by Elizabeth Burrows
With two months off from school during the summer, teens are faced with a decision of what to do with all of that extra free time.  Many take family vacations, explore hobbies and sports, or spend time exploring their communities.  Some teens choose to utilize that time, gaining valuable work experience in a volunteer position.

All secondary school students in Ontario are required to complete 40 hours of community service in order to graduate.  The YMCA of Greater Toronto is full of volunteer opportunities across many programs, throughout the year, and the summer brings a particularly special opportunity to have fun every day by volunteering with YMCA Summer Day Camps.

What other volunteer job involves swimming, playing sports and games, and making new friends all on the same day?

Last summer, Callum experienced just that, as he volunteered at our Toronto Winona Drive location.  Callum provided support to camp counsellors and was able to participate in all the camp activities he most enjoys, like swimming and theme days.
“It’s given me the background information to know what it’s like to be a camp counsellor and work with kids.”

Callum hopes to use that experience as a counsellor at camp this summer. He feels volunteering really helped him build communication and relationship skills crucial for jobs in any field.

Callum says he would encourage anyone thinking about volunteering with Day Camps to give it a try:
“I would definitely tell them that it’s a great job to do, you’re going to have a really good time and learn a lot.  It’s a really good learning experience for other jobs too.”

All YMCA Summer Day Camp locations across the GTA are excited to have the support of volunteers over the coming summer. Applicants over the age of 13 who are interested in soaking in all the fun camp provides are encouraged to visit the volunteer opportunities web page and check out all of the Camping and Outdoor Education postings. Our volunteers help make camp an amazing experience for everyone involved, and have the chance to make a huge and positive impact in campers’ lives.

Do you know someone with a special skill or area of expertise?  In addition to counsellor assistants, Summer Day Camps are always on the lookout for individuals over the age of 18 to bring their talents to camp and volunteer as special guests by leading sessions for campers.  Some choose to lead fitness classes or healthy eating sessions, while others perform magic or teach a skill or sport to our campers.  All of the information regarding eligibility can be found here.
