The NBA All-Star Saturday at the ACC was one for the books for many reasons. The dunk competition was one of the NBA’s best, it was the first time it was being held in Canada and most importantly, YMCA talent got to showcase their skills too!
Exhibition Game
At 7:30 PM, 20 youth basketball players from across our centres had the chance to play an exhibition game on the very same court NBA stars would perform skill competitions. Many NBA Legends were already on the court sidelines watching. Nerves and excitement were in the air – Richard, a YMCA member who was coaching the team knew “it was an inspirational moment for the youth.” Evelin Paredes, Youth Programs Specialist at West End YMCA, also accompanied the team.
You could see their teamwork and leadership playing such a big role on the court,” explains Evelin. “Playing together and experiencing this special event as YMCA representatives really unified them.”
During the last game, one of the players Joaquin got his last shot at the end of the clock – a highlight of the game. When asked about his buzzer beater moment, Joaquin explains, “I scored a 3 pointer buzzer beater while Draymond Green was watching! That was the best part.”
The Aftermath
Many of the YMCA players are featured in YMCA Canada’s It Starts Here campaign video. The video aired for the first time ever on the jumbotron for all spectators to see. After the game, the YMCA crew got invited on stage where they were recognized as the Junior NBA players of the year! After refueling with some food, our players spent the rest of the night in a suite watching all the skill challenges. The slam dunk contest won by Zach LaVine is one they will never forget – Joaquin who lives and breathes basketball says it was ‘historic’!
Mingling with the Stars
Selfie time!
Our YMCA team got to meet some of their idols such as, Anthony Davis, Russell Westbrook, James Harden and John Wall among many others. The YMCA team was even asked to take a selfie with none other than Stephen Curry! As part of the event, all were able to take home a pair of Curry basketball shoes.
"It was such an incredible experience to see all of the smiles on their faces when they saw somebody coming that they watch on TV,” recalls Evelin. “They got to meet their role models, the people that they look up to and get their moves and health habits from.”
This was a definite highlight for all:
