Take our Kids to Work Day: A Day in the Life of the YMCA

29 October 2015 - by YMCA of Greater Toronto
On November 4th, 2015, the YMCA of Greater Toronto will host our annual Take our Kids to Work Day! The event will bring together students and mentors, young people and adults, family and friends all in the spirit of learning and community involvement.

Take Our Kids to Work Day is organized by The Learning Partnership and is an annual national program in which grade 9 students are hosted by parents, relatives and volunteers at workplaces across the country.

What’s happening at the Y?

Take our Kids to Work Day at the Y will involve experiential learning and a variety of activities for participants; including tours, the opportunity to meet and interact with different people; to observe and get involved with programming, and truly get a feel for a day in the life of the YMCA.

Students will have the chance to learn about various roles, job-shadow and explore their career interests. Each participant will be given their own tool kit to kick start this day, including resources such as “Fast Facts” about what we do, Scavenger Hunt riddles and resources for career exploration.

Sharing our experiences

Every year, students and their hosts share their experiences and learnings from this day. We would like to profile two testimonials of students who participated in the YMCA’s Take our Kids to Work Day Experience.
“Thank you all for giving me a fantastic take your kids to work day. It was educational, fun and enjoyable for me and my friends. The experience showed me how life and work is like; how operations are executed and how great the staff are at the Y. I will always remember what I learned that day, and will use these skills later on in life. Thanks team, my day was awesome!” - Wing

“I had the opportunity to participate in the bring your kids to work day school program. I experienced firsthand how an organization works. Our group was shown a presentation on YMCA core areas covering employees, volunteers, members and anyone who walks into the YMCA and how they are served. I had the privilege of going to Y camps since the age of 7 so for me to get to know the organization itself was equally fun and interesting. The day was packed with all kinds of information. We were introduced to the staff at the head office and presented with a unique opportunity of sitting with a professional to know about their day to day work. At the end of the day I walked away with lots of information about the workings of the YMCA.” - Mukund

We at the YMCA are committed to this national initiative, which supports career development by helping students connect the world of work and their own futures, and supports our vision that our communities will be home to the healthiest children, teens and young adults.
