Safety is our priority at Y Day Camps
Today marks the first day of the Day Camps team’s our Director University — a week focused solely on training our Camp Directors to be the best leaders they can be this summer. Our Day Camp pledge is to provide fun and exciting programs for our campers, while also making sure they are safe. To honour this pledge, Director University is broken down into training directors in three main categories:
1. Camper Safety and Supervision: Safety of our campers is our top priority. During this week, Directors will go through extensive training on camper sign in/out processes, emergency procedures, supporting campers with challenging behavior, camper integration, and much more.
2. Customer Service & Site Standards: Providing great customer service to parents is essential to a great summer camp experience. Our Directors work as a team to perfect their skills in communicating with parents, staff, volunteers, and community partners, and practice things like issues management and dealing with unexpected events.
3. Program Standards: High-quality programming is important to ensure campers are engaged, learning, and are having fun every day. Directors will learn the standards that need to be set for counsellors when they are programming activities for their camper group, including ensuring that activities are age-appropriate and that each camp has everything it needs to safely and effectively carry out its programs.
Director University sessions are interactive, hands-on experiences designed to ensure that our Directors are ready to hit the ground running in July. And this is just one step in our extensive training process: in two weeks, nearly 200 senior Camp staff will visit beautiful YMCA Camp Pine Crest for four days of building relationships and even more training — all designed to make the 2018 camp season the best one ever for our campers and their families.
