Peace in practice: YMCA Peace Week 2016
Peace comes from being able to contribute the best that we have, and all that we are, toward creating a world that supports everyone. But it is also securing the space for others to contribute the best that they have and all that they are.” ~ Hafsat Abiola
The word “peace” brings about as many thoughts on what it means as there are people living on Earth. Some may think of it as a calm, restful state of mind and body; others may see it as being in the presence of the people they love; still others may see it as an act towards others.
However one may define it in their lives, peace is a vital part of building communities that everyone can be a part of, despite any differences that may be present—or even divide us. It allows us to be compassionate, to reflect, to discuss, to build—but most of all, to include others. Peace facilitates spaces where we can actively contribute to making the change we want to see in the world, right at home.
From November 19 to 26, YMCAs across Canada will be celebrating Peace Week. Nationwide, Ys are planning special events to explore and honour the many ways peace is made, shared, and recognized in their communities.
Here in Toronto, we’re excited to be recognizing our Peace Medallion recipients, taking part in healthy activities, and discussing community solutions. We’d love to have you join us.
