With the global pandemic and its effects on jobs and the economy, it's more important than ever to have control over your finances. Money and budgeting can seem intimidating and your financials goals may seem unattainable, but learning about the different ways you can save can keep you in charge of your money. It's especially important to start early, establishing solid money management habits from your teens to your twenties and beyond.

3 smart money-management tips

1. Automate what you can
Constantly thinking about saving money can be overwhelming. So make your savings automatic. Keep a separate savings account and check your bank's options to set up a process that automatically moves a predefined amount to it on a monthly or even weekly basis. Some financial experts recommend up to 20 per cent of each pay, when possible.

2. Understand your spending habits
At the end of each month, review your monthly credit card activity. See where you spend most of your money. Do you do a lot of online shopping or have a subscription to a magazine that you no longer read? Being aware of your spending habits can help you identify opportunities to save.

3. Check in regularly
It can be intimidating to review your receipts and credit card activity. But the more you do it, the easier it becomes.

To build strong money-management habits, automate your savings when you can, understand your spending habits and check in regularly. Attending the Personal Finance: I’m in Charge virtual event is a great way to start working on your financial goals.

The Wednesday November 24 workshop generated a lot of interest and we are excited to say that it got fully booked in a matter of days! A few of the registrants even won exciting prizes at the end of the event.
