Change Lives at this year’s YMCA Megathon
This week, children, teens, adults and families from across the YMCA of Greater Toronto will be taking on personal challenges to help make a difference in the lives of people living in our communities. We sat down with the person behind the scenes, Helen Barbalias, Senior Development Officer, Events, to find out what Megathon is all about.
YMCA GTA: Can you tell us about the YMCA Megathon?
Helen: Sure. The YMCA Megathon is a week of fitness challenges and fundraising events that happen at YMCA Health and Fitness centres across the GTA. This year, we have more than 80 events happening over 7 days across 8 locations -- it’s going to be bigger and better than ever.
YMCA GTA: You said it’s a fundraising event. What does it support?
Helen: Yes, the YMCA Megathon is a fundraising event. This year we are calling on participants to “Challenge Themselves” and “Change Lives” by taking part in Megathon. All funds raised provide financial assistance so more children, teens, adults and families can access supportive YMCA programs and services. You can read some of their stories here.
YMCA GTA: What types of fitness challenges can people participate in?
Helen: With so many different activities, there is definitely something for everyone. People looking to take on an extreme challenge can participate in 12-hour arriba or a 12-hour triatholon. Others looking to show their support, have fun and try something new could join line dancing or ping pong. You can check out what’s happening at all of the centres here.
YMCA GTA: How do people register for this year’s event?
Helen: Registering is easy. First you register online. Then, you visit your YMCA Health and Fitness Centre to sign up for your event.
YMCA GTA: Can people just support Megathon if they can’t participate?
Helen: Of course. You can pledge someone else who is participating at ymcamegathon.org
