Camp Comes to Cooper Koo
One of the most exciting additions is in Toronto at the YMCA of Greater Toronto’s new Centre of Community, the state-of-the-art Cooper Koo Family Cherry St. YMCA. The 82,000 sq. ft. facility will open its doors May 30, just in time to welcome 50 campers each camp session to participate in a variety of fun camp programs.
Here are some highlights of the programs offered at the Cooper Koo Y this summer:
- Basketball and Variety Sports programs will allow campers to work hard and have fun while building their athletic skills, teamwork and sportsmanship.
- Media Arts programs offer different ways to learn some behind-the-scenes tricks of media productions while creating comic books, Lego stop motion animations or their own short films.
- In Creative Arts, Dance and Drama, campers will explore the best of the arts by creating masterpieces throughout the week and putting together a showcase to perform in front of their friends and family. For those interested in painting, sculpting, drawing and printmaking, Visual Arts will allow exploration of various mediums, all to be shown in a special camp art gallery at the end of the session.
- For curious minds, children interested in experimenting and exploring anything from bridges and boats to slime, goo and foam will have a blast in one of the five Science Programs being offered at the Cooper Koo Y Day Camp this summer!
No matter which program they are enrolled in, every camper will have the chance to participate in traditional camp games and activities, including swimming in the incredible swimming pool three times a week - the same pool used last summer by athletes training for the TO2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games.
Welcoming the campers to the new camp this summer will be Day Camp Director, Linda, who is busy preparing for the summer and hiring the team of staff who will be specially trained to deliver the fun programming on offer at Cooper Koo YMCA. Linda is looking forward to seeing these staff act as role models for their campers, and witnessing the positive impact that camp counsellors can have on children’s lives.
“When campers form friendships with their counsellors, they know that they have someone they can trust, follow, learn from, and someone that will see their strengths and help them to tap into their potential. As a result, they will learn how to relate with others in healthy ways and increase their self-esteem.”
