In addition to the 900 seasonal staff we employ, last summer 127 individuals choose to dedicate over 12, 000 hours volunteering at YMCA Day Camp. In honor of National Volunteer Week, we wanted to shine a light on one of our dedicated volunteers, April!
Why did you choose to volunteer at Y Day Camps?
I chose to volunteer at the Y because I enjoy working with children and helping others. The Y is a welcoming place that offers many opportunities to gain experience while making a positive difference. And I wanted to be a part of that. For many years I was a camper at the Y. Counsellors put in a great deal of time and effort to make the experience fun and exciting for everyone fun. I’d like to do the same for others.
What is your favorite part of volunteering at Y Day Camp?
My favorite part of volunteering at the Y is getting to know the campers and getting the chance to play a part in their camp experiences. As well as the ability to be a part of a great team of staff and volunteers.
What have you have learned at Y Day Camp that has positively impacted other parts of your life?
From volunteering at the Y Day Camps, I’ve learned more about my responsibility to those around me. In order for me to do my best, I have to be aware and prepared for all that goes on. Especially in time management! The importance of communication is one of the biggest things I’ve learned by far, like asking for help when needed and making accommodations for others. It’s a big factor in keeping everything moving smoothly and making not only the camp experience(s) enjoyable and memorable but in other aspects of my life as well. Volunteering has helped me work on speaking up for what I believe is right, through building my confidence. The Y has and continues to introduce me to new people all over, giving me the chance to form new relationships and discover new opportunities!
