Volunteer Highlight

We’re fortunate to have many individuals volunteer with us at the YMCA of Greater Toronto, and we appreciate each one’s help. Occasionally, one volunteer stands out by contributing far more than is expected, such as Seyedeh Pourmousavi.
Seyedeh began volunteering in Uganda and Kenya, where she spent nine years assisting organizations dedicated to improving the lives of others. There, she saw firsthand how empathy and working together can bring about real change, especially in settings where individuals lack basic necessities, such as food and shelter.
In September 2023, Seyedeh and her family came to Canada, in part to seek medical care for their son. Shortly thereafter, she began learning the volunteer processes at the YMCA and enrolled in English as a second language (ESL) courses.
Seyedeh started volunteering with The Barret YMCA Centre for Newcomers to Canada in September 2024, as she had experienced the challenges of settling into a new country. Seyedeh recalls helping a newly-arrived family that was struggling to adjust. They were dealing with language barriers, the uncertainty of finding work, and the emotional challenges of starting over in a new place. With the help of her colleagues at the YMCA, Seyedeh connected the newcomer family to vital resources, provided them with language support, and offered a safe environment where they could share their concerns. Over time, she watched their confidence grow, their sense of belonging deepen, and their hope for the future strengthen.
This experience reinforced Seyedeh’s belief in the power of community and how volunteering at the YMCA Newcomer Program can be a life-changing journey. It allowed her to bring her past experiences into action. Each day, she sees that small efforts can lead to great changes and that providing a welcoming environment can truly make a difference.
“My journey, from Africa to a new beginning at The Barrett YMCA Centre for Newcomers to Canada has shown me the strength of human connection. I hope that my story encourages others to get involved in volunteerism and realize that with passion, unity, and a willingness to help, we can make a meaningful difference in our communities.” — Seyedeh Pourmousavi, YMCA of Greater Toronto volunteer
Her supervisor, Alberto, shares that Seyedeh is a true team player who demonstrates politeness, compassion, and respect when interacting with newcomers to Canada and YMCA staff. “Her positive attitude and willingness to help make a meaningful impact on the operations and the centre,” says Alberto.
Thank you, Seyedeh, for all you have done to support the YMCA Newcomer Program! We greatly appreciate your contributions — you’re a positive role model for other volunteers.
